Word Cloud Generator from Image
Word Cloud Generator from Image
Read words from an image and turn them into a word cloud. Image import supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP files through browser-based reading and OCR. It is useful for a photographed note, poster, whiteboard, worksheet, or screenshot when the words are visible and you want a fast visual summary.
How to make a word cloud from an image
- Prepare the image. Use a PNG, JPEG, or WebP file no larger than 5MB. A sharp, well-lit image with readable text gives OCR the best chance of success.
- Read and review it in the browser. Open the generator, choose image import, and select your file. The browser reads the image and OCR attempts to identify its words. Review the extracted text before generating.
- Generate your design. Choose the shape, colors, font, and available word settings, then create and save the cloud. Keep the original image nearby if you need to check a word.
What image import can—and cannot—do
Image import works with PNG, JPEG, and WebP images up to 5MB. It uses browser reading and OCR to turn visible lettering into text for the word cloud. Clear typed or printed words, good contrast, simple backgrounds, and a straight-on image generally produce better results than tiny, decorative, or crowded lettering.
OCR is not perfect. It may misread blurry characters, handwriting, unusual fonts, curved text, low contrast, shadows, glare, busy backgrounds, or text that is rotated or partly hidden. The feature does not understand an image like a person does, and it cannot promise a complete or exact transcription. Always review the extracted text, especially for names, numbers, quotations, and other details that matter. An image larger than 5MB or in an unsupported format is not a supported input for this feature.
For a digital document with selectable words, use PDF import. For readable text at a public HTTPS address, use URL import. The generator also still supports pasted text, CSV, and YouTube comments.
Good uses for an image word cloud
Turn a classroom whiteboard into a quick recap, visualize the vocabulary on a poster, summarize a photographed brainstorming sheet, or create a starting point from a screenshot. Image import can be helpful when the source is not already available as a document or web page. It gives you a visual way to notice repeated terms and discuss which ideas stand out.

Tips for clearer OCR
Use the highest-quality original available, crop away unrelated areas, and place the image on a simple background. Make sure the words are in focus and not cut off at the edges. If the image contains several blocks of text, a simpler crop may be easier to read than one busy full-page photograph. Keep the file under the 5MB limit and choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP.
After import, read through the extracted text rather than trusting the first result. Correcting a misspelled word or removing stray OCR characters can make the final cloud much more useful. A word cloud shows frequency; it does not preserve sentences, layout, tone, or the meaning of an image. Use the original image for context and check permission before processing or publishing someone else’s work.
Frequently asked questions
Which image formats are supported?
PNG, JPEG, and WebP are supported. The maximum file size for image import is 5MB.
Does image import use OCR?
Yes. The browser reads the image and OCR attempts to identify visible words. Accuracy depends on image quality, font, contrast, orientation, and background, so review the extracted text.
Can it read handwriting or a blurry photo?
It may produce incomplete or incorrect results. Clear, high-contrast, readable typed or printed text is a better fit. The feature does not guarantee accurate handwriting or difficult photography recognition.
What if my image is too large or in another format?
Convert it to PNG, JPEG, or WebP and keep it at or below 5MB. If you have a normal text PDF or readable HTTPS page instead, use PDF or URL import. Pasted text, CSV, and YouTube comments are also available.
Turn readable image text into a cloud
Choose a clear PNG, JPEG, or WebP under 5MB, review the OCR result, and create your visual summary.
For important work, treat OCR as a helpful first pass rather than a record. Compare the extracted words with the image, correct obvious mistakes, and remove labels or artifacts that do not belong in the topic. This small review step keeps a colorful result honest while preserving the speed of browser-based image reading.
If the first cloud looks incomplete, improve the source before changing the design. A brighter, straighter crop with larger lettering often helps more than extra styling. You can also paste a corrected transcription into the generator when exact wording is important, while keeping the image as your visual reference.
